Visiting without a guide saves money and lets you set your own pace. However, Cape Maeda enforces strict regulations for independent swimmers. You must bring specific safety gear and check the daily sea conditions before entering the water.
Can you go to the Blue Cave Okinawa without a tour?
Yes, you can snorkel independently if the sea conditions are safe.
Access to the cave is free. You do not need a guide to swim inside. However, you must follow Cape Maeda's local rules. This includes wearing mandatory safety gear and observing the daily flag system.
What do the flags mean at Cape Maeda?
Colored flags indicate if the water is open or closed for independent swimmers.
Management updates the flags based on daily sea conditions. If you do not have a guide, you can only enter the water when the Blue flag is flying.

What gear is mandatory for independent swimmers?
A life jacket or buoyancy aid is legally mandatory for all snorkelers.
You cannot enter the water without a life jacket. You must also bring your own mask and snorkel. Marine boots or reef shoes are highly recommended. The shore entry involves walking over sharp, slippery rocks.
How much does it cost to visit independently?
The cave entry is free, but you must pay for Cape Maeda facilities.
The official Cape Maeda parking lot charges 100 JPY per hour. Coin lockers cost 100 JPY. Hot showers are 200 JPY for 2 minutes of water. Hair dryers cost 100 JPY for 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Bring plenty of 100 JPY coins.

How do you access the water from Cape Maeda?
You must walk down a long, steep stairway to the rocky shore.
This public access point is the only way for independent swimmers to enter. The stairs can be wet and slippery. Take your time walking down. Once at the bottom, carefully step over the rocks into the shallow water.
When is it better to book a Blue Cave tour?
Tours allow entry on Yellow flag days and often bypass the public stairs.
If the Yellow flag is up, you cannot swim alone. Guided boat tours depart from nearby Maeganeku Port. This 10-minute ride drops you directly at the cave entrance. It is much easier than climbing the steep stairs with gear.
